Midterm check-ins

By: Kate Cammack, Center for Teaching

As we near the midpoint of our semester, it might be a good time to check in with your students about how your courses are going.

  • A simple approach is start-stop-continue – you can collect this anonymous info via simple Google Form or index cards distributed in class.
  • Columbia’s CTL has some valuable prompts intended to provide insight into students’ experience in small groups/teams, discussions, and laboratories.

I’ve also been exploring how to encourage my students to think more critically about their learning experience by asking them to identify what aspects of my course are making it “harder” or “easier” for them; see my current approach here (please use/adapt whatever you like). We then discuss the data as a class, which provides a nice little metacognitive opportunity.
